Purpose of the Exhibition
The purpose of the NY1–NY146 Walkway Exhibition was to promote the renovation, upgrading, and repurposing of walkways and open spaces in Gugulethu. This initiative aimed to inspire the community to take ownership of these spaces, recognising that true development must be driven by the people it impacts. By positioning the exhibition as a “water station” during the JL Zwane Women’s Fun Walk, the initiative sought to capture community attention, spark dialogue, and highlight opportunities for collective action.
Topics Covered during the Exhibition
- The role of walkways and open spaces in promoting safety, social cohesion, and community pride.
- The importance of community-led development and collective ownership.
- Sustainability of walkway projects and opportunities for replication in other areas.

Issues Highlighted
- Demand within the community for similar walkway initiatives in other neighbourhoods.
- Questions about how residents can formally participate in the project.
- Recognition of the need for resources, partnerships, and ongoing strategic planning to sustain the initiative.
